HB Gaphite Grading Scale: Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Unifies how the world calls different pencils
- Easier for people to find what pencil type they want
- Easier for artists/others to get a wide variety of pencils without repeats
Cons:
- Different companies have different standards
- Every pencil is unique to some degree so some pencils may be impossible to classify 'right'
Other Factors:
Even though there is a 'scale' to the hardness and blackness, there is no universal formula for any type of pencil. This results in every companies' pencils tobe different from each other. For example an HB pencil from Paper:Mate would be different from an Hb pencil from BIC. Another reason for difference caused inn pencils is where the pencils are made from, as-in which contry/region are they from? Some regions like their pencils darker (Japan) than others (USA). So not only are pencils different company to company, but from nation to nation aswell.
